Dog Training Tips

If you’ve just got a new dog and you’re looking for some training advice, there are a load of training programs out there on the net. Before you decide which program to get involved in read the dog training tips below regarding positive communication.

1. Be consistent so you don’t confuse your dog. Always correct him if he’s misbehaved and always praise him if you’ve got a positive reaction from him. For instance, if you need to keep your dog off the furniture, always chastise him if he tries to get on. Don’t give in some days or he’ll never learn which is the correct behavior.

2. Learning behavior takes time so have patience with your dog. Give him time to understand what you want of him. Don’t get frustrated. Take a break from training if things aren’t going to plan. Your dog will sense if you are getting stressed out, and teaching your dog to obey your commands will become much more difficult.

3. Praise is an essential part of dog training. Nothing will please your dog more than knowing he has made you happy. Praise him before, during and after each training session and when he’s performed an action to your satisfaction, give him a treat.

4. Although he needs plenty of praise, you will also need to be firm with your dog. Make sure he understands when you give a command but don’t yell or scream, this will get you nowhere, you will just frighten your dog.

5. Dogs love a routine, so try to keep your training sessions to the same times each day and your dog will soon begin to look forward to them. Keep the sessions short, tired dogs will be difficult, if not impossible to train. Training should be a good experience, so make sure you’re both in a good mood and you’ll both enjoy it.

6. Show your dog what you want him to do if you give him a command. For example if you want him to sit, say “sit” and push his bottom down. Then when he’s in the sitting position praise him. Don’t just stand there shouting “sit”, because he won’t have a clue what it is you want him to do. If you try and do this for all your commands, you’ll soon have a responsive, happy dog.

7. Don’t train for too long one one action. Dogs have a short attention span and will soon become bored and fail to respond. You’ll have bad days as well as good when you’re training your dog but don’t become despondent.

When you and your dog have mastered the basics of dog training, it could be time for you to move on to one of the more thorough dog training programs that will help you develop the special relationship that you and your dog can have.
